MS RD LDN
Who are you? My name is Mike Becker and I'm a registered dietitian from Haddon Township, NJ. What made you choose nutrition as your career? I developed an interest in nutrition and weight loss when I was 12 years old and wanted to lose weight. Between 12 and 13 years old, I lost 50 pounds by eating salads every day, running and skateboarding. Over the next few years, I spent a lot of time reading about nutrition and looking at food labels in the grocery store. Eventually I went to La Salle University to study nutrition and then studied nutrition in graduate school at Kansas State University. How long have you been practicing? I've practiced nutrition counseling since 2010 when I became a registered dietitian and have worked with children, adolescents and adults on strategies for losing weight. What’s your approach to nutrition? My philosophy on nutrition has changed quite a bit since I was a teenager eating salads. I believe that we don't have to give up all of our favorite foods and drinks to be healthy. Small changes make a big impact over time and one good or bad meal doesn't decide our future. What do you think is one key to success for your clients? The key to success in changing habits is believing that consistency is more important than perfection, especially when it comes to healthier eating and exercise.
